An Introduction to Cycling

Cycling, at the simplest level, involves riding a bicycle. Unlike many other sports, the rules are not especially complex and, in the majority of cycle disciplines, individual riders compete against one another or the clock. Though team events do take place, cycling is not classed as a team sport, as there is no direct and simultaneous interaction between groups of riders.

Today in the UK, cycling involves a huge number and range of sportsmen and women. British Cycling, the UK's cycling governing body, categorises the sport into the following disciplines:

  • Road
  • BMX (Bicycle Motocross)
  • Cyclo-Cross
  • MTB (Mountain Biking)
  • Track
  • Cycle Speedway
